our story
Charwalls (ker-wolz) started with a blank wall in our entryway.
After renovating our home in Atlanta almost ten years ago, we were left with a large empty wall in our entryway. We searched and searched for oversized art to fill the void but we couldn’t find anything we liked in our budget. With three kids, two dogs, and two busy careers, time got away from us and that wall just stood empty for some time greeting visitor after visitor with nothing until an idea came to us.
We were both born in the south and inherited the tradition of monogramming everything from our clothes, to our stationary, to our linens, and so on. And for us, the letter “A” just made sense being the initial of both of our family surnames. So, we decided to look for an oversized “A” print or painting which we thought would be easy. Turned out we couldn’t find anything that was simple, bold, and modern enough for us so we took matters into our own hands and worked with a graphic designer and commercial printer to create our own.
Over the years, visitors often inquired about the “A” print in our entryway so we finally decided to create our brand “charwalls” from our Atlanta and Nantucket studios. Not only did we want to fill that void of simple, bold, and modern typography art, we wanted give people a fun and affordable option for creating original and personalized works of art.
